Most homeless shelters have a time limit on how long people can stay, so when they have to leave they want them to be a little better off then when they came in. Most places will take clothes (especially winter items), sheets and towels, toiletries (even makeup for women to use when they have an interview), toys for children, and food items. Call and find out for sure what your shelter will except.

Animal shelters will take old towels and blankets, pet food, pet beds, and water bowls. Call and find out what they need or accept.
Furniture banks except, well furniture and basically anything else. Like home decor and kitchen items, basically anything to help make a house into a home for someone in need. Call and find out what they need or except.
