Essential oils are becoming more and more popular recently as more people are looking for alternatives to the nasty chemicals that are in most products nowadays. But most people don’t know that most of the time their oils contain the same nasties they are trying to get away from. I love oils and use them all the time so I want to make sure I am using the best ones.
How are they made?
I did the research to find out how oils are made. Different oils are produced in different ways depending on their chemical makeup. Most are extracted from the plant thru steam distillation. Freshly picked plants are suspended over boiling water and the steam pulls the oil from the plant. The steam rises and is captured into a vessel. It is then pushed along tubing then is rapidly cooled back into the water. After it cools the water and oil separate and then the oil is extracted.
Some plants contain aromatic compounds that are so water soluble, they remain in the water that is left over after distillation. Such waters are very fragrant and are prized by aromatherapists, who refer to them as hydrosols. Hydrosols are used mostly in cosmetics to moisturize skin, like rose water.
The other way they extract oils is through expression. This is the most direct way of extracting the oils is pressing them from the flesh of the plant. Similar to the way they process olive oil. This method is mostly used with some of my favorite oils, citrus as their oil is in the peel and easily extracted.
Some plants are harder to get oil from, hard to grow or produce a small amount of oil from a large amount of plant. That is the reason that oils like Frankincense are so much more expensive than oils like Lemon. I can grow Lemons in my backyard but not Frankincense.
doTerra is the only certified brand to be 100% pure. I used to buy the cheap oils you can get at the grocery store until I found out they are made mostly out of synthetic ingredients. There is no government or any other agency that is over essential oils. Any brand can be labeled as “pure”, “therapeutic grade”, or “aromatherapy grade”. These are catch-all phrases for companies to use to sell their oils. Cheap oils can contain synthetic fragrances, diluted oils, or oils made from bad crops. Essential oils are absorbed into the bloodstream through the skin, so if an oil is telling you not to use it on your body but you’re diffusing it, it’s still getting into your body, you just don’t know it. This is also why people don’t always get results or good results from their oils. When I used to buy my oils from the grocery store, didn’t get the results I was looking for, ever. I wanted to use essential oils but wasn’t sure what to do when the oils I was buying weren’t helping me.
Then I discovered doTerra. I bought two oils suggested to me to target my headaches and sleeplessness, I didn’t get much until I was able to test the two I bought. A couple days later I had a headache, I rubbed Pasttense on the back of the neck and a little while later was feeling so much better, without any pain reliever. For me, that was a game changer! Most of the time painkillers won’t touch my headaches but rubbing a oil on the back of my neck was able to help. I became a believer! I now am trying to help other people like someone else was able to help me.
